Chopping Spree Show Review

Hello Alt Fam, it’s Cat here with another review! This time, we’re shedding some light on a band thriving in Vancouver’s vibrant music scene: Chopping Spree!

When I Heard Jazz fusion, I Twisted My Nose.

Coming clean here: I am that type of person who says “I listen to everything” to a group of well-educated musicians to sound cool when I have the same five songs on replay the whole day. Until I inevitably exhaust my ears and start craving something different. Something unique.

And honestly, “unique” might be the best word in the English dictionary to describe Chopping Spree!

At the Rickshaw pit, ready to get the dust off my good old Canon Rebel, Chopping Spree! was nothing that I had expected. And I loved it. So much so that, in between songs, I literally skipped toward my friend, asking if she was seeing what I was seeing. If she had ever heard anything quite like that before.

And obviously, no. None of us had.

They Somehow Make it Work

Experimentalists with insane energy, and somehow, they make it work.

Chopping Spree! seamlessly weaves together influences from jazz, 70s Japanese fusion, progressive rock, metal, psychedelia, funk, post-rock, hip-hop, and beyond (there are so many genres here, I did my research!).

The band crafts an unpredictable and immersive sonic experience. And trust me, I’m not just throwing words here to try to sound like a smart-ass (because I know nothing about music terms, in fact, my piano skills are those of a five-year-old child)

However, you will have to trust me when I tell you that you just had to be there to understand the experience.

Music That Makes You Eager to Create

Chopping Spree! delivered an explosive performance packed with energy, spontaneity, and creativity, a mix that some big names lack. Their performance was inspirational, and I can say so because… well, it’s been months since I had this itch to review a show or an artist as a whole. And honestly, that’s what music, like any other form of art, should do to you: inspire you to create.

With Eddie Naranjo driving the rhythm on drums, Hayden Cohen on keyboards and vocals, Kyler Young on saxophone and vocals, Junny Chen on guitar, and Olivier Leclerc on bass, Chopping Spree! definitely brings together a powerhouse lineup whose chemistry fuels the band’s energetic and genre-defying sound.

The Live Experience

What I experienced at the Rickshaw felt both chaotic and deeply intentional, all tied by the band’s strong jazz fusion foundation, which blends their eclectic sound together. As I always say: no magic without mess!

If my incredibly persuasive words convinced you that you absolutely need to see Chopping Spree! live, you’re in luck: the band is sharing the Hollywood Theatre stage with Spank Williams on May 29th, and you can get your tickets right here! l

In case you’re eager to learn more about Chopping Spree!, their newly released debut EP Anemoia is available on all major streaming platforms (take a moment to admire the insanely stunning album cover made by @kasperlinh).

My personal favourites from the album are definitely the opening track “Anemoia”, “See you in 4.6 Billion Years” and “Portrait of Zahora” (this one hits so hard, you don’t even know).

Lastly, make sure to follow Chopping Spree! on their socials (@choppingspreeband) to stay tuned and remember to support your local music scene! Thank you for reading until here, and see you on the next one!
